Hank’s National Hug Your Squirrels Day Goes Well

Labrador and heart latte

national squirrel celebration day
= ?

An alert fan brought National Squirrel Appreciation Day (every January 21) to Hank’s attention this afternoon, after he had indeed spent an hour or two outside appreciating his plump friends and wishing he could celebrate National Hug Day with them. Imagine the coincidence! Though none of his bushy-tailed buddies came in for a squeeze, Hank thinks they still felt the love. This and every day.

Hank also celebrated todays mobbing crow and eagle visitors, last night’s acrobatic  raccoon babies and the local coyotes apparently padding around Phinney Ridge this week. He wishes them all giant hugs and other fine things.

Hank appreciates you today, too.

What would the world be, once bereft
Of wet and of wildness? Let them be left,
O let them be left, wildness and wet;
Long live the weeds and the wildness yet.
Gerard Manley Hopkins

  1. Holly & Eric says:

Good to see that Hank is “Carrying On”

  2. Hank. says:

Thanks, lovelies. We sure miss you! BIG HUGS to the felines, too. (That would probably go over as well as the squirrel hugging, but it’s the thought that counts.)

  3. shosh says:

Dear Hank, I admire how you don’t need to see the squirrels to believe. Clearly, you are one with the squirrely worldy.

  4. Dana Arnim says:

Spike enjoys squirrel appreciation day 365 days a year!

  5. judy patterson says:

Yogi sends Hank hugs too. He was out yesterday to see the squirrels but ll he got from them was a loud scolding. They didn’t know what national day it was evidently. Yogi came in disappointed but he had wine with his hot dogs and then was OK.

  6. Andy Lehman says:

I appreciate Hank!!! Hope you are well!

  7. Jo Woolf says:

Well done, Hank! Purdey doesn’t see many squirrels but she certainly remembers the encounter (very near miss) that she had with a very annoying individual. Appreciation, you say, Hank? She’s working on it! 🙂

  8. Hank. says:

Shosh, your kind regard means the world to Hank. Huzzah, madame, huzzah!

  9. Hank. says:

Yes, we suspected that. Being a younger, fitter model, Hank hopes Master Spike continues to appreciate the squirrels in similar fashion, keeping them young and fit as well. Carry on, good man!

  10. Hank. says:

Wine is an underestimated, and–dare we say it?–insouciant accompaniment to hot dogs. Hank feels that cats do well to keep folks guessing, so well played, Yogi, well played. Hug the squirrels another day.

  11. Hank. says:

Thank you, my dear! Hank and his minion send you very large hugs and a promise to get in touch soon. XXOO

  12. Hank. says:

Purdy may not have so many “national” holidays in the UK as we do in the US, so strictly speaking she isn’t obligated to take a moment and reflect…but Hank thinks it’s pretty darn sporting of her to do so! Especially considering a fat squirrelus nutcrackerus can approach the size of a small cat, with an attitude the size of a grizzly.

BTW, should the UK not have a national “Hedgehog Appreciation Day” perhaps this is an oversight that needs to be rectified!

Also, Hank is quite fond of dormice. Oh, the dormouse. Are there even words?

  13. Jo Woolf says:

Brilliant ideas, Hank! 🙂 Purdey loves dormice too, and would happily have a family of them as pets (she says, though not sure I believe her!)

  14. Hank. says:

Yes, he suspects the same. Big hugs to her regardless!

Woof! Talk to Hank
